Bolton Wanderers take former Middlesbrough and Blackburn forward on trial

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon, former Middlesbrough, Swansea City and Blackburn Rovers attacker Marvin Emnes has joined Bolton Wanderers in on trial.

Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers have taken Dutch attacker Marvin Emnes – who has been without a club since the start of 2019 – in for a trial period. Journalist Alan Nixon tweeted the news on Wednesday evening (see below).

Bolton Wanderers manager Phil Parkinson wanted to bring in a new striker during the January transfer window, but the club failed in their attempts as they looked to replace Christian Doidge.

It was reported at the start of February that a proposed deal for striker Ched Evans – currently on loan at Fleetwood Town from Sheffield United – fell through, leaving Bolton with Clayton Donaldson and Josh Magennis the only two natural strikers at the club.

However, now, Parkinson could have found a man to provide another option going forward.

30-year-old Emnes has plenty of experience in England, including a six-year spell with Middlesbrough, from 2008 to 2014. In his time at the Riverside Stadium, he scored 31 goals and provided 19 assists in 162 games after joining from Sparta Rotterdam.

After two loan spells with Swansea City in 2010 and 2014, Emnes made his move to the Liberty Stadium permanent. He spent three years with the club, playing 38 games notching up 11 goals and assists.

Emnes went on to spend a year and a half with Blackburn Rovers, before moving on to Turkish side Akhisar Belediyespor. However, despite signing a three-year deal, he left the club after just one season. The Dutchman only lasted a matter of months at Vancouver Whitecaps, before he was released on January 1st 2019.

Now, if he impresses on his trial with Bolton, he could be set for a return to football and a return to England after a stint away.
