Hull City, Nottingham Forest and Oldham Athletic join race for Ayr United striker

Hull City and Nottingham Forest have joined the race to sign Ayr United’s Lawrence Shankland.

The prolific striker is out of contract at the end of the season and is the subject of plenty of Football League interest, according to The Scottish Sun.

League Two side Oldham Athletic are also being linked with a move for him with Paul Scholes already looking towards summer recruitment. Swansea City, Rotherham United and Sunderland have all been mentioned in the past as well.

Shankland, who has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season,  is free to leave Ayr for nothing in the summer as it stands.

He started his career with Queen’s Park and an impressive goal scoring season in 2012/13 earned him a move to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen. He spent four years on the books at Pittodrie but failed to score in 17 appearances for them.

Instead, Shankland spent time out on loan at Dunfermline Athletic, St Mirren and Greenock Morton before leaving Aberdeen permanently to join Ayr in the summer of 2017.

He fired 29 goals in the Scottish third tier last season to fire the Somerset Park club to title. He is their most prized asset but they are expected to lose him in a couple of months’ time.

A move to the Championship seems the most likely outcome for him. Hull City look set to delve into the scottish market this summer and have also been linked with highly-rated Motherwell forward Jake Hastie today, as reported by The72.
