Oldham Athletic linked with ambitious move for Sunderland and Swansea City target

Sky Bet League Two club Oldham Athletic are being linked with an ambitious summer move for Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland according to reports by The Scottish Sun.

The 23-year-old Glasgow-born goal machine has netted a sensational 30 goals in as many appearances for The Honest Men this term but is out of contract at Somerset Park at the end of the season.

Sky Bet Championship club Swansea City reportedly saw a transfer offer for the player rejected by Ayr United in January while third tier club Sunderland have also been heavily linked with a move for the youngster.

It has now been suggested that new Oldham Athletic boss Paul Scholes is an admirer of Shankland and the former Manchester United midfielder could opt to make an ambitious move to take the player to Boundary Park in the summer.

Ayr United hope to persuade Shankland to sign a new contract with them, although they openly admit that the forward is almost certain to move on at the end of the season in a bid to further his career. The player joined the Ayrshire outfit as a free agent in September 2017 and helped the club win Ladbrokes League 1 last season.

Shankland failed to make the grade with Ladbrokes Premiership club Aberdeen earlier in his career but dropped down the divisions to launch his senior career, a move which has proved hugely successful.
