Crystal Palace and the January transfer window

Analysing and debating what to expect from Crystal Palace in the January transfer window - who could they sign and who might depart?

What has the manager said?

Roy Hodgson has made no secret of his desire to sign another striker and more options at full-back, especially with Joel Ward expected to be out long-term with a knee injury.

"We have had our wish list when it comes to what we need to complete the squad," Hodgson said. "It's a good squad, but what we need to complete it are those cover players, or those who can compete for a place at right and left-back.

"And we do think we need another forward who can help us with the forwards we have. That was the case before the summer transfer window and it definitely remains the case now.

"Whether or not we are going to be able to find those people and have the wherewithal to bring those players in, that's something I'll have to wait and see."

Speaking amid an injury crisis after their 1-1 draw with Brighton on December 16, he added: "We're very short at the moment in the quality of players we need to help us out, and I only hope in the January transfer window we find a few players that will give us a chance to have a somewhat calmer period in the second half of the season."

He added to that after their win over West Ham on Boxing Day, saying: "We've got to try to stay in the league. We've got such a small squad and we can't keep asking for miracles. If we can get through Christmas and the chairman can give me four or five new players than we can do extremely well.

"That's under discussion at the moment. I'd like, if I'm going to stay here, not to find the situation I'm in at the moment, where I have to put the emphasis on so few players to keep our heads above water."

What did Crystal Palace do in the summer?

Crystal Palace's biggest summer business was selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United for £45m. But they did not spend the money right away, landing Gary Cahill and Stephen Henderson for free while Victor Camarasa joined on loan from Real Betis.

Jordan Ayew had spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Selhurst Park and arrived from Swansea on a permanent deal while James McCarthy also joined the club from Everton, with both players bought for an undisclosed fee.

Who have they been linked with?

Analysis: What to expect this January

Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge...

"Palace are likely to be busy in January and are targeting three positions in particular, with a focus on players under the age of 23. They want additions both at right-back and left-back, and a mobile centre-forward - and decent funds will be available. They could spend around £25million on a striker and have around £15m each allocated for full-backs.

"There is renewed interest in Fedor Chalov of CSKA Moscow, for whom they had bids turned down in the summer, but they could face competition from the likes of Chelsea. At right-back, it is understood they have scouted Genk right-back Joakim Maehle but he is also on the list at Southampton.

"In terms of outgoings there remains a big question mark over Wilfried Zaha's future and he has been linked with Chelsea. If he leaves, Palace could make another effort to sign Brentford's Ollie Watkins."
